Tinker Bell Cage DIY

While I do love collecting and displaying toys, I love finding new and elegant ways of incorporating DIsney into the other rooms of my home. While I was browsing and pinning on Pinterest one day, I came across this blog post (http://blog.hwtm.com/2014/07/neverland-birthday-party/) sharing different ideas for a Magical Neverland birthday party. I thought the Tinker Bell in the cage idea was absolutely beautiful and since I had some cages leftover from my wedding, I knew I had to make one!

I’m not the most crafty or artistic person in the world, but I do love taking on little projects that do not involve any real artistic ability. The good news is, anything I share on here will be very simple to put together and if I can do it, absolutely anyone can too! You won’t have to deal with one of these situations:

 

If you are ever in a charity shop or local yard sale/car boot sale, keep an eye out for some pretty cages because there are definitely plenty floating around for very reasonable costs. If you don’t feel like waiting, any store selling home decor will almost certainly have pretty cages. If all else fails, there’s always eBay!

Now putting this Tinker Bell cage piece together is very, very simple. All you need is:

• One pretty cage
• Faux flowers in the colour(s) of your choice
• A piece of gold coloured card (I bought a piece of A3 gold card from Rymans)
• Scissors
• Optional: small LED lights

 

First, make sure you have a cage that can actually open up so you can get your flowers, Tinker Bell, and lights inside. I found a cage at my local car boot sale which has a latch that allows me to open the entire top so I can get my goodies inside.

Next, arrange your flowers along the bottom of the cage. I found a vine with some very pale pink and green faux flowers that I thought worked beautifully. Because my flowers were on a vine, I first circled the flowers on the bottom of the cage and then I started moving upwards and even pushed some of the flowers out of the cage so the flowers didn’t look too enclosed.

Next I made my golden Tinker Bell. Now if you’re someone who knows their way around a pencil and paper, you may choose to draw your own Tinker Bell for your cutout. Unfortunately, I cannot draw to save my life so I traced an image of Tinker Bell I found online onto my gold card and then cut it out (http://colorine.net/wp-content/uploads/tinkerbell-coloring-pages_75767.jpg). You may choose to use some glittery gold paper if you would like something a little more flashy. I chose to stick with gold as I wanted something a little more subtle. Once I had my Tinker Bell cutout, I then carefully placed my cutout into the cage on top of the flowers. This make take some effort because the Tinker Bell will not stand up straight very easily. I ended up putting some sticky tack on the back of my cutout and sticking it to one of the flowers behind Tinker Bell so she would stay in place.

Now the last bit is completely optional. If you have some small fairy LED lights, you may want to wrap it around the cage for that magical pixie dust look/effect. It may be too busy for some. I love fairly lights on absolutely anything so I decided to wrap some lights around the cage. I think it would be nice for evenings when you’re in the mood for a Disney movie night with a little magic!

Now this does not have to be done with a cage. This would definitely work with a pretty lantern, which would be even more movie accurate! The important thing is to have fun with it. You don’t need to be an artist to bring some Disney magic into your home <3
