RC Toy Story Collection

RC, Andy’s remote control toy car, communicated entirely in honks and whirs. Although he never spoke a word, Andy’s toys had no trouble understanding him and he played a very important role in helping Woody and Buzz make it back to Andy towards the end of the first Toy Story. RC made an appearance in all three Toy Story movies, however he only appeared in the flashbacks of the third movie because sadly RC was not one of the toys that Andy decided to hold on to when he was all grown up. Although Andy did not decide to hold on to him, RC was always very loved by Toy Story fans. Fans loved him so much that Disneyland Paris actually created a giant RC Racer Ride where you get to ride in RC himself up a 25-metre high half-pipe. As John Lasseter said in his interview about the Toy Story Collection, before the Toy Story Collection was created there was never a completely movie-accurate version of RC on the market. Thinkway Toys has done a wonderful job in creating a movie-accurate working remote control RC and if you did not get one right away, finding a new RC in the box will be no easy task unless you are willing to pay a hefty price.

The packaging of the Toy Story Signature Collection RC looks fantastic. As he is part of the Toy Story Collection, the box is what the box would have looked like when Andy purchased him. In addition to the RC car itself, RC comes with a remote control and a certificate of authenticity. Although RC looks great in the box and would be much more valuable in the box considering how hard he is to find, it seems an absolute shame not to take him out because he has so many different features and is loads of fun to play with.

RC is incredibly accurate to the movie and is a remote control car just as he was in the movie.RC requires 6 AA batteries and 3 AAA batteries in his remote. This is a lot of batteries to put into one toy, but it’s definitely worth it. This is by far the most technologically advanced toy in the collection as he has an infrared received, audio sensors, independent left/right rear wheel drive, obstacle sensors, and infrared transmitter on the remote. He even has a little wheel on the bottom to help him turn and for his pop-up actions.

The remote control gives you plenty of options to choose from once you’ve turned him on and switched him into play mode. You can steer him in any direction you like using the forward/back lever or the steering wheel. One really nice feature is that RC is able to turn 360° just like he did in the movie when the toys grabbed Woody and starting spinning him around, making RC spin around in circles as well. Steering this toy can be a little difficult sometimes and as with all technology, there will be some hiccups where he won’t respond. Generally, I would say he works very well. In addition to general steering, there are different play modes which you can access from the remote control such as the follow mode, explore mode, a mic on/off button, and talk mode. In RC’s follow mode, he is meant to respond to your voice and follow you. The idea of the follow mode is amazing but unfortunately it is not very reliable. Sometimes it will work when you call RC’s name and he will turn towards you and drive towards you, but many of the times he wont respond or move at all. The explore mode is far better and more reliable. When you hit the explore button RC will start moving around on his own and explore the room. His sensors work quite well and he will avoid obstacles. Occasionally he will bump into things but when he does, he will reverse and move into another direction. When you push the talk button RC will start beeping at you and his eyes will move. This really brings him to life and makes you feel like you have your own living RC.

As the Toy Story Collection RC is the only completely film-accurate RC out there, he is definitely a must-have for your Toy Story Collection. He will come at a hefty cost if you try purchasing him online brand-new. I have seen him go as high as $600 on amazon at one point, which I think is completely absurd. The alternative is to keep your eyes peeled on Ebay as there are always used RC toys popping up at a reasonable cost. I think getting a used RC is actually the better option because this toy is a load of fun and leaving him in the box would be an absolute shame. Unless you have two, take him out of the box or get him second-hand and watch him come to life in your very own home!
