Squid Ink Potion Bottle DIY

DIY Squid Ink Potion

Harry Potter fans are little merch magpies who collect treasure after treasure to bring the magic of Hogwarts home. Naturally we want to share our treasures with the world and display them proudly. I started brainstorming different ways I could display my goodies and decided that I just had to make a collection of potions to create an apothecary type display.

I started searching online and I came across Cooking and Craft Chick on Youtube who has an absolutely amazing channel with great DIY craft videos and decorating ideas. There are so many great potion DIY videos to choose from on her channel and I decided just have to recreate them one by one. This Squid Ink potion is very easy to make and look absolutely great on display.

Materials

Cooking and Craft Chick outlines all the materials you need for these crafts in her videos. Here is a collection of the materials I used for this potion:

Squid Ink Potion

Bottle: I found by bottle from Lakeland, however you of course can use any bottle of your choice.

Label: You can print the squid ink label here.

Difficulty

As you will see from the video, this DIY is incredibly simple. Any amateur crafter or diy-er such as myself can make this potion.

First I poured a little bit of hair gel in the bottle even though this was not part of Cooking and Craft Chick’s instructions. I just wanted to make the mixture a little thicker so that it didn’t slosh around too much.

Next I added the black paint. I didn’t add all the liquid at once. As per Cooking and Craft Chick’s instructions, I added a bit of soap, then the paint, and so on and so forth.

I filled the bottle up quite high, but I left some space at the top so the liquid could bubble up. This adds a little something to the potion and it makes it look a little more authentic.

Next I tied the twine around the neck of the bottle as per Cooking and Craft Chick’s instructions. The knot she suggested worked beautifully for me. I used a lighter to burn off the little strays sticking out and to give the twine an aged look. This step is completely optional and if you do decide to burn the twine, be extremely careful and get an adult to help as twine burns very, very quickly.

Finally, I Mod Podged the Squid Ink label onto the bottle and voila, I was finished! 🙂

Don’t be late for Potions Class!

I think this DIY went incredibly well and I am very happy with how my potion turned out. These potions are incredibly fun and easy to make. They make for an excellent project with the kids on the weekend if you have little ones. If you’ve made any potions yourself, please share! I would love to see your creations and see who has earned their liquid luck!
