Lego Ideas The Big Bang Theory Set

Math, Science, History, unravelling the mystery, that all started with the Big Bang, hey!

It comes to no surprise that this Lego Ideas project gained a lot of support. To say The Big Bang Theory is incredibly popular is an understatement. This show has had a huge impact on our culture. Yes, it’s a very funny sitcom, but it’s also a sitcom that gave so many “nerds” and “geeks” out there someone to relate to, inspired young women and men to pursue a career in science, and made becoming a “nerd” popular! Obviously being the nerd that I am, when I saw this Lego Ideas set hit the shelves in the stores, I bought it immediately.

This Lego set recreates Sheldon Cooper and Leonard Hofstadter’s living room, where most of the series takes place, and includes all the geeky details. This set is made up of just over 500 pieces and retails for £49.99 in the UK and $59.99 in America. Although this set is a tad on the expensive side, I think it’s worth the extra expense as it is so well done.

Let’s begin with the packaging. This set comes in a box that is approximately 14″ x 7.5″. The front is white with an image of the entire set and the edges have a starry space print. The back of the box shows three images of some of the finer, geeky details along with images of all the Lego Minifigures included in the set, which include Bernadette, Howard, Penny, Leonard, Sheldon, Amy, and Raj.

Inside the box we have a relatively thick instruction booklet and the Lego pieces separated into bags labelled “1” and “2”. I really didn’t understand why the pieces were separated in the way they were because as I was building the set, I needed pieces that were in random bags. The labelling of the bags didn’t really add much to the organisation of the pieces.

There are 70 pages of pictoral instructions. The instructions were very easy to follow and although this set had a lot of very small, delicate pieces, this was a very, very fun build. This set took me approximately 4 hours to build and I enjoyed every minute of it. Of course to enhance the building experience, I had The Big Bang Theory playing in the background (and also while I write this post, hehe).

Here are some photos of my progress:

The level of detail in this set is absolutely amazing. The bookshelf behind the couch is very impressive as it not only has books all across the shelves, but it also has the signature geeky details on the top such as an action figure, a green lantern lamp, globes that could be a nebula plasma ball or a celestial globe, and a rocket. What also really makes the room is the DNA double helix molecular model, which is a very crucial detail for the room. We also have a telescope, a whiteboard with little markers that depicts Sheldon’s interpretation of the ‘Higgs boson particle’ for a game of Pictionary. I thought this was a really funny addition.

Another great thing about this set is that we get a full set of minifigures of all the characters. We get Sheldon, Leonard, Bernadette, Howard, Raj, and Penny. We even get a little Cinnamon minifigure for Raj! The faces for all the minifigures are all reversable as well so you can choose from a happy, lighter facial expression or an annoyed, angry expression.

The details do not end with the shelf and the minifigures. There are a lot more little details such as little Chinese takeout container pieces, cutlery, posters and a whiteboard for the wall, a computer in the corner by the window, curtains, lamps, a newspaper, etc.

As I said before, although this set is a tad on the expensive side, the level of detail and accuracy is absolutely stunning. In terms of display, I think the box actually makes for a really nice background to the set. I displayed my set proudly on my toy shelf in front of the box. I think this is an amazing set and I highly recommend it to all the Big Bang Theory fans and Lego collectors out there.
