Nintendo Talking Togepi Toy 1998

Interactive Talking Togepi

Toge Toge Togepi!

As a 90s baby I was absolutely obsessed with Pokemon and spent countless hours watching the television show and playing the Gameboy game. I remember when Pokemon: The First Movie was released, I was so unbelievably excited that I convinced my mom to let me have a day off school and be the first person to see the movie. I had so much Pokemon merch it was unbelievable and I am absolutely gutted that I did not hold on to most of it. Unfortunately, as a child I had no idea that Pokemon would stand the test of time.

Luckily I managed to find this talking Togepi treasure at a toy fair. In the episode Attack of the Prehistoric Pokemon, Ash found a very old Pokemon egg. He carried this egg around for a few episodes and then in the episode, Who gets to keep Togepi?, Togepi hatched out of its egg. Misty became Togepi’s owner as she was the first thing it saw when it hatched. This resolved the “Who gets to keep Togepi?” question fairly quickly despite Ash’s reservations. For many, many episodes thereafter, we see Togepi constantly travelling around outside of a Poke Ball in Misty’s arms.

This talking Togepi toy is an official Nintendo toy made by Tomy in 1998. Hasbro also released a talking interactive Togepi toy in 1999. Togepi plastic and is approximately 3 inches tall. This Togepi toy is not your usual talking toy. Togepi is voice activated and sways from side to side when it speaks. Togepi has a on/off switch under it’s left arm and when Togepi is switched on it responds to your voice by saying it’s classic “Toge, Toge, Togepiiii!” while swaying from side to side. This is the only phrase Togepi will say, just like Misty’s Togepi in the television show. Although it may not be to scale, it is perfectly accurate to the show and makes for a wonderful desktop friend.

Considering that this toy is approaching 20 years of age, it is an incredibly well made toy by Nintendo. It is absolutely adorable and it looks and sounds exactly like the Togepi in the television show, just the smaller version. For someone who is feeling nostalgic about watching/playing Pokemon when they were younger, this would be an amazing treat, especially because it is Pokemon’s 20th birthday this year. Even if you’re not a toy collector, this would make for an excellent desktop pal 🙂 Don’t worry, you can always switch Togepi off when you need some peace and quiet 😛
