Vinylmations are wonderful artistic Disney collectibles that I very much regret not collecting earlier. As I was hunting for Christmas presents for my husband, who is a huge fan of Monsters Inc, I stumbled across this Angry Sulley Popcorn Vinylmation. Vinylmation Popcorns are re-imagined hot, fresh new Vinylmations created by the Disney Design Group artists. The Popcorns are hollow vinyl figures just like the traditional Vinylmations and Funko Mystery Mini figures. I thought the Sulley Popcorn Vinylmation looked very different and unique, even to the normal Mickey shaped Vinylmation figures. What makes this Evil Scarer Sulley particularly unique is that he is a variant limited edition Sulley of 750. Luckily my husband absolutely adored this Angry Sulley figure because he loves absolutely any Pixar collectible. I personally had very mixed feelings about this figure and I think I would prefer to collect the normal Vinylmation figures.
This Evil Scarer Sulley Popcorn Vinylmation is just under 5 inches tall, both his arms are poseable and can turn all the way around, and he is of course positioned leaning forward in his scaring stance. His body, like all Popcorn Vinylmation figures, is shaped almost like a balloon being large and round at the top and smaller and flatter at the bottom. While this is a unique shape, I’m personally not a fan of the shape of his body because I don’t think it really matches his character or his actual body. He has two grey horns on top of his head and his feet are quite skinny. The combination of Sulley’s skinny feeth, his forward standing position, and his body being very top heavy makes it very difficult to stand him up properly without falling. This can be very frustrating considering that the cost of these Vinylmation figures can be quite high at $24.95.
The actual artwork of his figure is very well done. Of course Sulley is blue with purple spots all along his sides and back. The purple and blue paint on this Sulley figure is significantly darker than the blue and purple you see on the happy Sulley Popcorn Vinylmation and this of course is because this Evil Scarer Sulley is clearly in the dark in a child’s bedroom scaring away collecting scream for the Monster world. He has a very angry face painted on with his mouth wide open showing all his teeth. The detailing is quite nice and even includes little lines on the sides of his eyes showing us how hard he must be frowning and roaring. Like with all Vinylmations, the word “Vinylmation” is printed on the bottom of Sulley’s left foot and it also states that this Sulley is a Limited Edition of 750, which is always a nice touch for any collector.
On the note of being a collector, Vinylmations are obviously highly collectible and I think the packaging looks great on the face of it, but there are improvements that could have been made. The packaging is obviously movie themed and meant to reflect a traditional popcorn box. The packing includes a a clear plastic cover with red lines and a box with popcorn art work along with artwork of other Popcorn Vinylmation characters. My biggest complaint about the packaging is that once you slip off the clear plastic sleeve, the windows of the box are actually complete empty, which means you can touch the toy and anything can get into the box. Because the windows are large without any plastic, the frame of the box is thin and isn’t very well supported. This means if the box is not stored properly or handled too much, it will easily bend and break which is terrible news for collectors. Had the packaging been more sturdy, it would have been amazing because the movie style packaging is absolutely fantastic.
As I said before, I have very mixed feelings about this Sulley vinyl figure and the Popcorn Vinylmations in general. They definitely are different and look very unique, but the shape is odd and does not always match the character. There is a Dumbo Popcorn Vinylmation figure which I think looks absolutely fantastic because the shape and packing has a circus feel to it, which completely works with the Dumbo character. The Mickey figure works really well as well because Mickey is a classic and anything that looks retro will always be a good fit with a classic character. I am glad that there are not too many Popcorn Vinylmation figures in the collection because the figures are quite expensive and with so many other vinyl collections to keep up with such as Funko and the traditional Vinylmations, this would have just been too much. As there are a limited number of these figures, I think they are nice to include in your toy collection if the figure is one of your favourite characters or if you’re looking to add something a little different and unique to your collection. While I will not be going out of my way to collect the Popcorn Vinylmation figures, I do not regret purchasing this Evil Scarer Sulley and I do think it adds a little something different to my collection. I think the packaging does look great and I will definitely display him in the original packaging.
